The 'Friends of Marcia Powell' are autonomous groups and individuals engaging in prisoner outreach, informal advocacy, and organized protest and direct actions in a sustained campaign to: promote prisoner rights and welfare in America; engage the Arizona public in a creative and thoughtful critique of our system of "justice;” deconstruct the prison industrial complex; and dismantle this racist, classist patriarchy...

Retiring "Free Marcia Powell"

As of December 2, 2010 (with occasional exceptions) I'm retiring this blog to direct more of my time and energy into prisoner rights and my other blogs; I just can't do anyone justice when spread so thin. I'll keep the site open so folks can search the archives and use the links, but won't be updating it with new posts. If you're looking for the latest, try Arizona Prison Watch. Most of the pieces posted here were cross-posted to one or both of those sites already.

Thanks for visiting. Peace out - Peg.

Greetings all,

Issues w/Jane Valez-Mitchell did re-air at 4a.m. and, although brief, packed a powerful punch with great graphics and a strong message! We hope to have a link to that to send out within the next few days. Let's keep the momentum going and continue pushing for more mainstream coverage!

Thanks to Sis. Shakeerah Abdul al-Sabuur for mining this gold on You-Tube, here are 4 links to a 2/17/10 interview Charles Evers conducted w/Mrs. Evelyn Rasco during her visit to MS (Pts 1 and 2 don't completely focus on the topic).

Greetings all,

Here's some brief media updates, thanks to everyone for keeping their ears and eyes open and for continuing to put out information on the case of the Scott Sisters and especially the medical emergency that Jamie Scott is enduring within that prison hellhole.

Bro. Earnest McBride wrote an excellent article on the 3/5 Scott Sisters rally held on 3/5 in Jackson, MS which is featured on the FRONT PAGE of the current (3/4-3/10) issue of the Jackson Advocate newspaper! Many thanks to Bro. McBride for this article as well as his top-notch and very informative blogtalk radio duties on the Empowerment Hour Online University along with Bro. Kermit Eady, which has featured the case of the Scott Sisters several times and together are broadcasting regularly towards their freedom!

~~~~~~~~~~~
TheGrio.com is an NBC site which also features an article on the Scott Sisters! The site describes itself as "the first video-centric news community site devoted to providing African Americans with stories and perspectives that appeal to them but are underrepresented in existing national news outlets."
The piece they did is at: http://www.thegrio.com/news/mississippi-women-fight-to-appeal-life-sentences-for-11-robbery.php so please check it out and enter your comments, there is a bit of a debate happening and your input would be great! Let's maximize this to the fullest!
This brief article has already led to another media source, the radio show "Keeping it Real with Al Sharpton" which today featured Bro. David Wilson who heads up TheGrio.com and is best known for the film Meeting David Wilson which aired last year on MSNBC. Hopefully this will lead to even more supporters and continue to build the momentum to a national demand for the release of these women!
Now that Al Sharpton cannot deny that he is aware of the case, there's no reason for him to not act on this knowledge on their behalf:
Forward ever to more and more mainstream media coverage!
