The 'Friends of Marcia Powell' are autonomous groups and individuals engaging in prisoner outreach, informal advocacy, and organized protest and direct actions in a sustained campaign to: promote prisoner rights and welfare in America; engage the Arizona public in a creative and thoughtful critique of our system of "justice;” deconstruct the prison industrial complex; and dismantle this racist, classist patriarchy...

Retiring "Free Marcia Powell"

As of December 2, 2010 (with occasional exceptions) I'm retiring this blog to direct more of my time and energy into prisoner rights and my other blogs; I just can't do anyone justice when spread so thin. I'll keep the site open so folks can search the archives and use the links, but won't be updating it with new posts. If you're looking for the latest, try Arizona Prison Watch. Most of the pieces posted here were cross-posted to one or both of those sites already.

Thanks for visiting. Peace out - Peg.

Policing the Police: Next week's COPWATCH training

Hey all: here's the info for the training on the 28th, before the racial-profiling activities planned by Arpaio and the MCSO once SB 1070 goes into effect. We really need people to turn out for the trainings so you can come on patrol on the 30th. If you can't make it this weekend, head out to this one next week. It's a good training with great people and it's a way to really make a difference. Showing up with your own video camera is a bonus, but you don't have to be out there shooting any deputies - you just need to be diplomatic and take good notes.

After you're done with the training, come join us at Civic Space Park (424 N. Central Ave, where the New Fair Trade Cafe is) - we'll be having a rally to gear up for the 29th.

See you out there.

New "Policing the Police" Training:

Thursday, July 15, 2010

7:00pm - 9:00pm

Tonatierra

802 N. 7th St. (at McKinley)

If you could not attend the first "Policing the Police" Training, we're holding a second one today (Thursday). There will also be more dates scheduled for July, so stay tuned if you can't make this one. If you cannot attend, please invite others who might be interested.

Sheriff Arpaio has promised to hold another racial profiling sweep on July 30th, the day SB 1070 goes into effect. We need dozens of volunteers out on the street to monitor and document the activities of the sheriff's deputies on that day. Attend this training and learn how to safely and legally observe the police during this sweep and in your own neighborhood.

Members of Phoenix Copwatch will lead the training, covering topics such as how to stay safe and avoid arrest while dealing with the police, tips for effective videotaping, and proper documentation of police activities.

This training is open to the public (except law enforcement officers). It will be conducted in English and Spanish.

"Policing the Police" Training Tuesday.

This came in today from the good folks at Phoenix Copwatch. It's a good training and a great chance to meet like-minded folks If you want to fight police brutality and racial profiling in Arizona, I'd recommend Copwatching as one good way to do so. Just keep in mind that cops do go there uninvited to see what we're up to and who we are. Arpaio's posse also takes mug shots of us on the street so they can identify us, so don't go if you're vulnerable to them in any way.
